The Royal Commission has released its report and published 136 recommendations for change.
I am proud to publicly release the Royal Commission into Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence report, With Courage: South Australia's vision beyond violence.
The 700 page report is now published on the Royal Commission’s website, alongside the accompanying Voices report – a dedicated and powerful document reflecting the authentic voices of people with lived and living experience.
The Commission has listened deeply to thousands of people, hearing their stories, struggles, wisdom, questions, hopes and pain. We heard from people of all genders and sexual identities; people with diverse abilities, cultures and lived realities; people from across all of South Australia.
Powerful stories came from the frontlines: victim-survivors, workers, academics, advocates, police, public servants, service providers, and national and state commissioners – including more than 1,300 people with lived and living experience.
The advice, aspirations and lived experiences shared by more than 5,000 people are not just acknowledged by this report; they are its heartbeat. Their voices resonate throughout these pages, and are further amplified in our Voices report.
I want to thank and acknowledge every person who has contributed to our work over the past 12 months – especially to those who gave evidence or made submissions, completed our Share With Us survey, attended one of our listening sessions – even those who stopped me in the street to chat; all of this helped build a report that I am very proud to deliver. These pages are a powerful call to action. It is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to prevent and respond to domestic, family and sexual violence in South Australia.
The report is called With Courage: South Australia’s vision beyond violence. In invokes the legacy the late Helen Oxenham OAM - one of the founders of the women’s shelter movement in SA - who created The Place of Courage memorials to victims of domestic, family and sexual violence.
I thank the Premier and Minister Hildyard for their faith in me and commend this report to their government.
It is time for South Australia to lead with courage and I have every confidence that we will.
A special thank you to my team for their support over this journey. It has been a privilege.
Natasha
