Read on for a quick update on the recent work of the Royal Commission.
I want to thank everyone who has made a submission to the Commission’s Issues Paper. I will take some time in coming weeks to review the many documents, stories and data that has been sent to us. All of the information will help us develop a deeper understanding of the domestic, family and sexual violence systems in South Australia and issues with it - and will further inform our inquiries including public hearings later this year.
Another significant piece of work which will continue to help inform us is our regional visit program. Our first visit – to Port Pirie and Port Augusta this week – provided some very clear insights into the challenges faced by regional communities, as well as the myriad complex issues and service delivery gaps impacting Aboriginal people living in regional and remote communities.
We held a range of significant meetings with community and sector groups, such as KWY and Uniting Country SA, who invited victim-survivors to speak with us in a safe, trauma informed way. We also met with key government agencies who deliver services to the regions, including SA Police, SA Health and local councils.
Each conversation helped me understand more acutely the major concerns and issues facing those who live with this scourge every day. I thank them for their time. In particular, I would like to acknowledge those with lived experiences – your bravery in sharing your stories with me was inspiring.
Next steps for the Commission include consolidating the information we have received to date, finalising plans for our next regional visits and announcing other opportunities for community and sector engagement.
